* If you are new to my diaper-sewing blog, please start HERE.  My pattern templates were not designed to be used with rolled/zig-zagged elastic or the tack&turn cased elastic method.

I now have a YouTube channel as well: ArfyMakes YouTube channel
I do live-streaming on Wednesdays at 2pm Pacific time, and you can make requests for what I'll sew, or I can help you trouble-shoot your own projects.

My diaper pattern templates are all on google docs.

  5. Thank you for the free diaper patterns - the doll diapers are awesome...now I know what I'll be making for Christmas this year!

Also, thank you for making a printable Snapazoo pattern. My husband, Mark G. introduced the Snapazoo toy to the Kam Snap community on Facebook - It's wonderful that others will be able to make this fun toy using your pattern!

  7. Weird question but is the circle in the middle near your rounded wings in the photo above just to match up the pieces when you print them? Or is it a snap I need to place? I DL'ed your square OS and it has it as well, I'm just not sure what to do with it.

Also, how do I know what length elastic I should use for these?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is snap-placement for if you use them for an AI2 with a snap-in soaker or a fitted with a snap-in soaker.

I have no idea on elastic lengths. I am a tack, stretch, tack person. I stretch to when it is ALMOST all the way stretched out at the full casing length. People claim that is usually at when the elastic is about half the casing length. I don't cut until after sewing in though. I don't use the method when you tack the edges and sew the casings afterwards like Tutsy does on her tutorial. I sew casings first, then feed my elastics in after that.

    2. Never thought of sewing the casing first and tacking after. Thank you for the tip. It will definitely make life much easier.

  10. The two solid lines going around the pattern, is the outer for T&T and the inner for serging? I am M-L fitted and the NB serged fitted and planning to serge both, and I want to cut to the right size :-)

Thanks SO much for making all your work available - it is a really generous gift!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The outer line is always the cutting line. For serging, you just trim a little bit of it while serging (up to 1/4" usually). The first line in from the cutting line is the outline of the diaper after being T&T. You can use it as your T&T sewing line, but I typically just sew in about 1/4" and not the full amount that I allow for in the templates. It is all sort of an approximate range.

  11. Thanks for posting these. I'm trying to make a flip style with extra gussets since my daughter has issues with it all coming out the legs. Once I get all my materials, I'm hoping to figure this out. I can send you pictures of the finished ones, if you'd like.

  12. What software do you use to draft your patterns? I have a mei tei wrap conversion pattern I want to draft to pdf and offer it up for free. I love the Grobaby knockoff - that is brilliant. I loved the fit of the Grovia covers when my son was a newbie, but he soon had to switch to wool only because his little but was getting too many rashes.

Any chance you'll take a swing at the GroVia snap in soaker? I have a hand drafted version.

  17. how many yards of fabric for the fold out os fitted, assuming it's 2 layers throughout? these patterns are fabulous, thank you!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is about 18.5"x18.5" for each layer serged, and about 19"x18.5" for each layer T&T. So, a single full width 19" cut would be enough for one diaper plus some extra. However, a half-yard would not QUITE be enough... although, you could totally make it work and just shrink the rise down a tiny bit.

  18. I am looking for the easiest diaper to make for a mission project. We are making diapers for infants in an orphanage in Vietnam. We have lots of flannel fabric. They need diapers that dry quickly and aren't too hot. What are your suggestion

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'd say do fold-in fitteds with 4 layers of flannel. Do mostly the OS and a few XSs. :) That would be what I'd do at least. They'd wash and dry easily. They'd need covers though. So, you could send along some fleece covers as well (I'd just do really simple 2-layer fleece covers so they'd be easy to care for and breathable.)

  25. Hi! What weight and age are L and XL diapers? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thank you for this! I have made 2 for my son! I seem to be doing something terribly wrong though.... they sewed well, look great and fit great, but the second he urinates, it runs/seeps out the leg hole (soaks up the back side of the fabric - I did 'hidden pul.' ) I have done a soaker with 2 layer diaper cloth and 2 layer terry... and I've tried that plus 2 layer terry and one layer micro fiber... they're getting FAT! I have them snapping to the back of a double welt pocked AI2. hahah but no matter, something is wrong. The leg holes seem to be just right too - like the disposables we were using, not loose and not so tight his legs fall off.... help!! thank you!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. "Hidden PUL" doesn't work with a cotton outer unless you do some VERY specific things. Even then it is hit or miss. The issues is that the cotton *WICKS* the fluids right out from the inside absorbent materials and to the outside. That is just what happens when you have an full panel absorbent outer on a diaper. The only time it might be semi-functional is if it were with an AI2 with a thick repelling fleece inner AND ruffled legs. Or if you do an AIO with the PUL inner cut-out to put space between the diaper absorbency and the outer fabric.

      Delete
    2. THANK YOU, Arfy!! That mkes perfect sense about the wicking... guess I just had to hear it. I had cotton, then PUL, then inside was fleece and the pocket with snap in soaker. Off to try again, without hiding anything;)! Thank you, for the patterns, tutorials AND taking time to help me out!! - Amanda

      Delete
    3. If you're doing a pocket, what kind of fleece are you using? That could also be an issue and you could be having repelling in addition to your wicking to the outer. Pockets have to be microfleece (the VERY thin kind), pre-washed suedecloth (NOT microsuede), or wicking jersey in order to both allow the moisture easily through and keep the surface fairly stay-dry. :)

      Delete
    4. I have microfleece, one was thicker but really 'tight/fine??' and the other was really fine and thin... both had the same issue. The thinner one was actually worse...almost none of it made it to the soaker. Thank you for that though, I was thinking only fleece (so new to this;)), nice to know about the others. To me, the pocket allows the insert soaker to maybe wash better?? Is there really a benefit of that, or are AIO better? Thanks;)

  30. This is probably a dumb question, but I'm new to this, so here it goes. Do you pre-wash your prefolds before cutting them to make them into fitted diapers? You know, for shrinkage?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I just found your blog and I think your patterns and tutorials are awesome! I have a question though. What is the advantage (if any) for ruffled legs/elastic vs non ruffled?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is usually just an issue of personal preference or aesthetics. The only place where it CAN actually provide functional benefits is to help reduce wicking in AI2s with repelling inner fabrics and potentially absorbent/wicking outers.

  32. I am working on the small t&t fold in fitted and I cannot get the elastic right. Can you help me out on how long it should be for the legs and the back and also how wide the elastic should be? Thank you so much!

    1. Here is how I install elastic in almost all of my diapers: http://prefold2fitted.blogspot.com/2013/05/installing-cased-elastic.html
I use 3/8" poly braided elastic for my fold-in fitteds (and MOST diapers I make) and I never pre-measure.

  33. So I just made the Snapazoo. My first attempt I tried using a couple layers of leftover fleece I had laying around from Halloween. Epic fail. I've been on the hunt for the perfect material that was also not very expensive. I was thinking maybe those fun foam sheets you can find at Michaels but they are kind of expensive. Anyway, I was at CVS and saw a dish drying mat that had soft microfiber on both sides, and a thin layer of foam in the middle. BINGO! I don't have a serger, so I did a loose zig-zag around then cut out the shapes so the whole thing wouldn't fall apart, then redid the zig-zag a little tighter to clean it up. I was able to get 2 out of the one dish mat (that I paid $3 for) once I scaled the pattern to about 80%. :-D Super stoked on the Snapazoo.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think maybe the easiest way to do this is to look at the trainer pattern with the stretchy sides, and scale it up. Or you could take the kid's underwear and make your own paper pattern to match the sizing, then add seam allowances.

  39. I received some handed down Bumpy and Biobottoms diaper covers made from two layers - the outer is made from cotton and the inner is pul (I think, the tag says 100% polyester). I know you don't like hidden pul. Is this the same as hidden pul? Will it cause the same type of wicking as hidden pul if the entire inside of the diaper cover is pul? I would love to make replicas of these diapers because I enjoyed the fit on my newborn baby, but am unsure if the wicking will be a problem.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, for a cover, that is not the same thing. :) I have made covers before with cotton outers and PUL inners and, as long as the cotton doesn't come in contact with the fitted, prefold, or soaker inside, it won't wick. :)

There are so many options of different diapers and I love that, if I was wanting a pattern for a one size fits all pocket diaper what one would be best for me to get? Thanks again you are so wonderful

    ReplyDelete
  45. Arfy, the pattern for the sized fold in fitteds does not have a clickable link in the list, is there another place to find that?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ok I have found some amazingly thick mf where 4 layers looks like 1 1/2
If I put a zorb material in the center 2 layers of mf folder To make a sandwich then fold over layer of hemp fleece does that sound like enough for a heavy wetter over night I really want to make a insert that you will only need one in the diaper I hate shoving multiple things in the diaper
So or would be 1 layer of zorb 2 layers microfiber and 2 layers of hemp should I put a microfleece over as well ???

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Original Zord or Zorb 2? I have only used either because I got some free cuts. However, I really don't like them for longevity. They just don't hold up well or really work all that great. I would rather do something like 2 layers of the hemp fleece under 2-3 layers of the MF. The MF acts like a sponge and soaks in quickly, and the hemp BELOW it sucks in more slowly but holds in better and prevents compression leaks. It really depends on the shape and dimensions of you inserts and how they fit into your diaper.

  49. What size would you recommend for an 11 month old that's 33" tall and weighs 32 pounds?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Probably the longer wing OS squaretab for a pocket, AIO, or AI2. The large T&T style fold-in-fitted would be great for a fitted. If the baby gets to 36" well before PTing, then you could use the XL sq tab pattern as well and just add some rise snaps.

  50. Could someone give me advice on wicking fabric? I bought some Babyville wicking fabric to use as the inner layer of a diaper with PUL on the outside and planned to put in a snap in soaker made of a premade microfiber pocket insert and sew a layer of the wicking fabric on top so the microfiber would not be against the baby's skin. However when I tried putting water on the wicking fabric placed over the top of the premade insert, the water just beaded up and rolled off unless I really padded at it with my fingertips. Then the water seemed to pass through onto the pad underneath. Is it normal to have the liquid bead up and roll off. I thought wicking fabric was supposed to pull the liquid through it to the absorbent layer underneath not have it roll off. Now I worry if I use it I will have problems with leaking. Any advice on this. Has anyone else used wicking fabric. I would appreciate input before I try my first diaper. Thanks,

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That is how wicking fabrics work. They wick through with a little bit of pressure. That is why a good-fitting diaper is important too. So the material is right against the skin. However, they will wick faster after a few washings as long as there is no build-up/residue.

  51. Hi Arfy, thanks so much for all your work. I am expecting my first baby and am looking forward to sewing up some of your patterns. I like the idea of the AI2 diapers, and was thinking of having a cotton outer with a PUL inner where the soaker pad snaps in. I was reading through the comments and noticing that wicking was a common issue. Do you have any suggestions? Does my plan sound okay? Thanks so much! :)

    1. I'm guessing this is your first time using a cloth diaper pattern? ;) They do look big before sewing up. The elastic shrinks down the size a LOT. Plus the layering and how they are worn. If the 1" square measures correctly, then it is correct. Read through the related tutorials for the pattern you printed, and then have fun sewing! :)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Outside line is the cutting line. The next solid line inset from that is the turned line. You sew between those two before turning (your seam allowance.) The rectangles inset from the H&L tabs are the laundry tabs.

    2. I'm struggling! My daughter is 35in and 26lbs at 1 year old… she is SO LONG that my HappyFlue OS and BumGenius OS AIOs don't fit anymore! I've made a few flour sack diapers following your Longer Wing Squaretab pattern, but they aren't big enough… I've tried altering your pattern a bit (but I am COMPLETELY new to sewing, like NEW NEW) and it doesn't work at all. I want to make a diaper that will last a bit longer (not sized so that I have to continue to make more).

      Delete
    3. You might be either printing the pattern wrong (make sure to set it to print 100% as some print settings automatically scale down pdfs.) Or sewing them up with too tight elastics or not enough seam allowance. 35" and 26lbs is NOT big for what the OS patterns should fit. My son was bigger than that when he outgrew most OS. IF neither of those are the issues, then you can sew my XL squaretab and add a couple rise settings. It will fit a large preschooler even. I'd say up to about 50+lbs.

    1. Sew up all the pieces that make up the inner (including hook if doing H&L and soaker snaps). Then sew and assemble all the pieces that make up the outer (including snaps - rise and/or front)... Then put them faces in and sew together like any other diaper. :)

      Delete
  63. I am curious. I've noticed that you don't place rise snaps in any of your prefolds-to-fitted diapers. Can I make a one size prefold fitted with rise snaps?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They're very thick/bulky through the middle due to their nature as prefolds (many more layers in the middle due to how their folded before they're sewn.) So, it makes for a sort of thick awkward place to do something like rise snaps. Plus, you'd have to either unstitch them, insert your pliers down inside the middle section, or put long prong snaps through MANY layers.

I have been searching for the perfect diaper and I think I found it in one of your patterns. You can email me at ashleyhermann711gmailcom to talk about it. Thanks so much!

  72. Hi Arfy! Someone in one of my sewing FB groups gave me the link to this sight today, and I too wanted to thank you so very much for all this information. I'm a new grandma to be, so I will study all of this info, and make up a couple of different ones for the newborn, be it girl or boy, and see what my DIL likes. I don't know if you still monitor this page here or not, and if you still design and post about diapers would you be so kind as to give me the link? Again, than you so much for the time and effort you have put into this marvelous resource....

    1. You just click on the link and then print them. Make sure you're set to print at 100%. NO scaling. :)

    2. Thank you for replying to my query. I want to transfer the pattern to MS Word to save it in a file together with other patterns. I assume then I will need the measurements as it will not be on scale?

  75. What seam allowance should I be using on the OS Squaretab pattern, I followed the dotted lines and it was a bit too small. should I do a 1/8th or 1/4th? I did a 1/2 where the dotted line was roughly

    1. Outer line is always the cut line. The next solid line in is the turned line. You sew between those two depending on the thickness of your fabrics. The dotted lines are visible seams AFTER turning. Like the elastic casings and the top-stitching.

  76. Do you perhaps have instructions on which fabric to use, how much and how to make the diaper please?

    1. I assume you're looking from a tablet or a phone, because there is right-side navigation from the computer web browser interface that has all that information and direct links. :)

  77. What's the best pattern to use for a "pocket fitted" (a pocket diaper with no water resistant layer used under a cover/wool)? I plan on dual envelope openings in front and back, so I can't use the fitted patterns with fold over rises.

I'm thinking the OS multiwing fitted? Or will the OS squaretab work?

  79. Could you help me with which pattern and fabrics to use for a special needs 6 year old boy, he doesn't walk so is sitting or lying down all the time. My friend has asked me to make them for her but I don't know where to begin! She'd like to be able to change an insert when it's wet. We're in the UK and we don't seem to be quite as up to date with cloth diapering x

    1. I don't have any patterns that would be properly sized for an immobile 6 yr old. If you could give me his weight, height, size around the hips, and rise (belly button through the legs to his waist line in the back), then I could probably create a pattern that might work. I would assume his legs/thighs are very thin if he is immobile. But, if you could give me a general impression of his body type, that'd help too.

    2. Hi Arfy! Thank you so much for these! You are so generous! Bless your heart! My question is... I am starting in the cloth diapering late with my 5y/o autistic daughter. I am planning to DIY because need it to be affordable. I am lost to all the terms in the cloth diapering. Hoping you could advise me, which pattern should I start with for my 20kg daughter. I measured her out and her waist is 21inches, and her measurement from back to front thru the crotch is 20inches. Leg holes are 15inches.

  81. Hello! I'm wondering about licensing for your patterns to be able to sell diapers made from them. Do you offer licensing for folks to sell your diapers? If you'd rather email me, my address is suzannah.e.wilsonATgmailDOTcom. Thanks!

    1. All of my patterns are free to use and sell from. Just don't claim them as your own or try and sell the patterns themselves. If you're planning a commercial business where you'll be producing more than 200/month, then write me for more specific agreements. :)

  82. I just want to say thank you for making your excellent patterns available. I have made so many of your fitteds with various materials and they fit and work SO MUCH BETTER than fancy schmancy 30$/diaper retail fitteds. I love sewing them up, and I am going to be sad when my little ones are out of diapers.

    1. Hi! I don't have anything designed quite for anyone that big. However, the sized XL Square Tab would likely just barely fit her right now. Once you make one of those and see how it fits, I am happy to advise you on how to best scale up that pattern based on her build and what does and doesn't work for you/her.
However, for a bigger kid with bigger wetting, something like a fitted style diaper might work better for higher absorbency options. Like wearing a fitted with an oversized cover. Then you could just have a few PUL covers (which are more challenging to sew) and several fitted shells... and maybe use trifolded XL sized prefolds as a soaker pad inside the fitteds.

    2. Thank you so much Arfy! I will print out the XL Square Tab as you suggested and start from there. I did not quite get the second paragraph tho. So that would mean I put two "covers" on her, right? A fitted diaper then a PUL cover to contain the leaks? Thanks!

      Delete
    3. Oh,I suddenly got it... a fitted is an actual diaper already... it's all absorbency but no waterproof layer. Did I get that right? THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS ADVISE!

  93. After being in relationship with Wilson for seven years,he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. I explained my problem to someone online and she suggested that I should contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back but I am the type that don’t believed in spell, I had no choice than to try it, I meant a spell caster called Dr Zuma zuk and I email him, and he told me there was no problem that everything will be okay before three days, that my ex will return to me before three days, he cast the spell and surprisingly in the second day, it was around 4pm. My ex called me, I was so surprised, I answered the call and all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that happened, that he wanted me to return to him, that he loves me so much. I was so happy and went to him, that was how we started living together happily again. Since then, I have made promise that anybody I know that have a relationship problem, I would be of help to such person by referring him or her to the only real and powerful spell caster who helped me with my own problem and who is different from all the fake ones out there. Anybody could need the help of the spell caster, his email: spiritualherbalisthealing@gmail.com or WhatsApp him +15068001647
