An old classmate has decided to start cloth diapering her new baby. So, I thought I'd sew her up a couple different types of diapers to try. Here is a step-by-step on how I sew up my OS FOE Cover template:
Cut out PUL and add snaps.
If doing hook and loop, add front panel loop strip.
Using a 3-step zig-zag stitch, sew on your fold-over-elastic.
Pulled tight through the legs at full stretch, just hugged with no stretch
around the wings and front, and pulled 75% stretch across the back.
around the wings and front, and pulled 75% stretch across the back.
My machine settings for the 3-step zig-zag. I have a Janome.
FOE all applied.
Sew on your wing H&L tabs and laundry tabs next.
Inside.
Outside.
Finished cover.
Wipeable Inside.
Laundry tabs folded in to prevent snagging in the wash.
All fastened up!
cute Arfy :)
ReplyDeletei love this cover, so cute, also i just wondered what fabric you put on the inside of the cover to reinforce the snaps? i have just got my first pair of kam snap pliers and snaps and am going to make my first attempt of your nb/sml diaper. do you have the pattern link for this cover? thanks
ReplyDeleteIt is just PUL. I used a plain white PUL scrap for the front (shiny side in so it is still wipeable), and some of the printed PUL for the wings. :)
Deletethats great thank you for replying so quickly :)
Deletefound the link lol!! should really use my glasses when i am on computer!
ReplyDeleteJust curious, any feedback on how well the cover fits from newborn to large? I have cut and sewn 2 waiting to add the snaps but before I go ahead on the other 20 I have material for just wondering if you've heard how well they fit? BTW these are set easy to sew! I am a beginner and could sew one up in about 20 minutes! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHow long is your strip of FOE for this style cover?
ReplyDeleteI've measured it out at 50-52 inches.
DeleteI don't have a 3-step zig zag stitch on my machine. Can I use a regular zig zag stitch? What settings would you recommend? I love your blogs!
ReplyDeleteI would like to make this with gussets. Should I alter the width of the crotch or stretch the FOE less around the leg or anything like that so that my diaper cover doesn't turn out too tight around the leg for my bigger baby? What would you suggest?
ReplyDeletethank you so much for making this great pattern...it's just what I was looking for! One question though, how do you turn the foe 90 degrees sewing from sides to top? Or is that a separate strip of foe? I can't tell looking at your pictures how you did it. Thanks, Devin
ReplyDeleteIt is a separate strip. :) I think that shows better in some of my other pictorial posts with FOE.
Deleteit's me again. So I see it's a separate strip. So now I'm wondering if you would share with me how you get it to look so neat and clean! Turn under extra length of ends after sewing to cover? Or tuck ends under itself before sewing to cover? Thanks, Devin
ReplyDeleteI just cut it right to the edge and use some fray-stop and often a tight zig-zag vertically or a square stitch right at the edge. :) Take a look at my FOE trainer tutorial to see the zig-zag edge.
DeleteWhat is the approximate weight range of this diaper cover? In the past I have used Thirsties size 1 and size 2 covers. How does it compare?
ReplyDeleteWhat is the size of the FOE
ReplyDeleteI use 1" FOE that is specifically labeled for diaper-sewing. Some FOEs will wick very badly. I bought most of mine from FOEyourdiaper.com when various colors were on clearance.
DeleteHi! Thanks for your pattern! I just had a question about elastic markings. I don't see where to start stretching the elastic on the back of the diaper.
ReplyDeleteI stretch it in the single-layer area. About 2.5" in at each side.
DeleteHi! i'm making some fleece diaper covers (two layers, blizzard fleece - practically bulletproof!) and I want them to be t&t, sized (NB-L), two rows of snaps, and round wings. Would if be too much to ask you to draft patterns for me? Ive tried repurposing some of your os patterns but they just don't turn out right. HELP!!! Thanks :D
ReplyDeletep.s. I would be willing to donate lots of the covers I make to other moms in need!
First of all thank you for sharing all these tutorials and patterns! This is a great resource from which I've learned lots! I was wondering is there an XL FOE cover or just the OS? Baby is outgrowing his OS...If there isn't, how much larger do you think I would need to make the pattern for an XL? Like an inch all the way around? Thank you so much again!
ReplyDeleteSo, basically an "OS" pattern is usually a stretched medium. To make a true L or XL, you'd want to widen the back more than the front and also widen a little bit through the middle and front. An XL would also increase the rise (total height front to back) to about 21" as well (22" for cased elastic). You could try taking my XL sized Sq Tab diaper template and trace the shape of the OS FOE template on each wing and at the front. I think that'd likely work. I'd still add in some rise snaps though just to be safe.
DeleteI think also widen the wings. Like increase the general radius of the curve by about 1/2" all around. I wish I had time to draft something up today for you. :(
DeleteThank you so much! You are the best!
