Newborn Serged Fitted

I am working on sewing up an entire newborn diaper stash for a local mama friend of mine who is due this Spring.  :)  After about a dozen turned and top-stitched NB-S fitteds, I was a bit worn out, so I drafted up this simpler serged newborn template for the next 15.  ;)

Then I stitched up this quick little tester.  I'm very pleased with it.  Now to fit in the time to sew up the other 14.  ;)  (I usually use cased elastics because of their easy replacement and longevity...)

  1. This is great thank you for all of these wonderful patterns. I just wondered what fabrics you have used for this diaper?

    1. This one is just a sherpa outer and bamboo/cotton fleece for the 2 absorbent layers. I have a trifolded cheapo Big-Lots 100% cotton terry washcloth as the "soaker."

    2. Is the bamboo/cotton fleece you use heavy fleece or normal, I have found both heavy and lite fleeces and am not sure wich one would be better. It's says they both have the same absorbancy but I am still unsure. Thanks

  2. Is there any way you can show us how you case your elastics in a serged diaper? I've never been able to figure out a method that actually works for me to do that. TIA!

    1. Sure. I'll do a pictoral this afternoon (if my kids will let me). I just leave the middle of the front open though. Just like my T&T fitteds. Then I sew my casings, install the elastics, and then serge the front up as the very last step. Then I just use a yarn needle to thread the long serger tails in.

  3. Where do you get your Sherpa from?

    1. I've never bought any myself. The little bit I used here was given to me by a friend. :) I know that naturesfabrics carries some, and I am sure that many of the other CD sewing supplies shops do too.
I tend to trade for scraps and leftovers and try not to buy too much new since I don't usually sell what I make. I really only buy my bamboo fleece new and other stuff that I can get from my local craft/fabrics stores on a whim.

  4. Where can I find your pattern? I'd like to try and make some newborn diapers for my friend's baby shower in March.

  5. What is the elastic length that you use? or what is the final leg with elastic measure?
